Phu Quy Island in pristine condition

phu quy island

Lying in central Viet Nam, about 103km from Phan Thiet city, Phu Quy district is an ideal tourist destination for holiday-makers as it houses 10 small islands, with Phu Quy Island being the biggest in pristine condition.

Every day there is a ship leaving the port in Phan Thiet city to bring locals and visitors from the mainland to Phu Quy, with fares costing between VND150,000-200,000 each.

There is also a high speed boat to the island, and the service cuts the travel time by half, just two hours, with fares costing around VND330,000.

Phu Quy is famous for its natural beauty and tasty foods. Despite the long voyage, the tour of Phu Quy and nearby islands still attracts many visitors as a Vietnamese saying goes "High mountains can’t barrier lovers”.

The island district has a total area of 32sq.km. It has an abundant source of seafood, making its Binh Thuan province the second largest fishing area in Viet Nam.

Phu Quy is like a generous host that would try to compensate for visitors after a long journey. Its foods are fresh, tasty, cheap and weird. They include “Moon crabs” that have red spots on the back, and “King crabs” that have a better quality than in other areas.

The district also offers steamed or grilled lobsters that can make a visitor’s tongue really “numb”. There is a buffet from snails which are soft, sweet, and fat.

Fish buffet is another feast that eaters can’t forget, with enough boiled, grilled, fried, steamed fish, cooked porridge, fish soup, and fish rolls which are always extremely tasty.

Visitors would be surprised by the wealth of the islands. All the roads are wide and asphalted. Basaltic soil makes fruit trees luxuriant, including the mango and guava that have sweet tastes thanks to the climate and soil characteristics.

“Anything in Phu Quy is fresh and surprisingly cheap, from seafood to fruits and meals,” says Nguyen Lam Anh, a visitor from HCM City, adding that it is a real joy to rent a motorbike to tour around the island.

“We should also get up early to catch the sunrise and wait for the fishing boats to come back. You may feel blackouts with all sorts of sea produce,” he confides.

Some visitors have fun going on a boat to floating houses to learn how to feed fish and crabs, and have lunch there.

Another destination in the district is Linh Quang pagoda, built in 1747 with the sacred ancient Buddhist statues. Van An Thanh Temple was built in 1781 to worship Nam Hai (East Sea) Spirit and exhibit a 20m-long whale skeleton.

The Cao Cat Mountain at the altitude of nearly 100m, with Linh Son Pagoda erected on its top, and the giant boulders cliff is an ideal spot to contemplate the panorama of the islands.

The beaches on the island are very beautiful and clean as they are far from residential areas.

Despite no big hotels, there are decent rest houses, and local people are friendly, Lam Anh remarks.

Tran Ngoc Can, an official from the island district, says Phu Quy is wild and attractive, but local tourism is yet to develop because of poor traffic conditions.

“According to our tourism development plan from now till 2015, with a vision for 2020, the island district will boost tourism as a key economic sector. To do this, we are calling for investment to upgrade infrastructure and build more transport ships,” he says.

But many visitors are happy to explore wild nature on the island.

“We visit the islands to wash lungs and eyes, and more importantly to get rid of trouble from city life,” says Lam Anh.

Enjoying Sa Pa budget-minded diner’s way

Sapa Street Food

Sapa tours - There are high-quality touring services available when one visits Sapa in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai, there are many high-priced things in the mist-enveloped town for ones to empty their pockets, and there are also top-notch accommodation facilities there for well-to-do tourists.

However, to really enjoy the nature-blessed town, most visitors to Sa Pa often choose the opposite way around. In this regard, roadside food vendors there offer budget-conscious visitors a real good experience.

Just imagine small open fires along the street leading to beauty spots in Sa Pa often surrounded by groups of visitors who want to enjoy food the way Sapa residents do. Most popular dishes on offer are simple barbecues that can make tourists’ mouth water.

Barbecues are attractive to most people, and are quite popular for those living in localities with temperate climate. However, grilled foods in Sapa will bring another experience to visitors.

Sa Pa, some 350 kilometers north-west of Ha Noi, is an ideal place to enjoy grilled foods for its variety of dishes such as grilled egg, chicken, beef with vegetable, rice and chestnut among others. What makes grilled foods there more enjoyable is the way they are served, as vendors of tribal groups there prepare such food on small fires by the street to cater to tourists.

On the rough way to Thac Bac, or Silver Waterfall, for example, one can see many such open fires within 100 meters from the foot for the water fall.

Sweet potato, corn and cassava can be considered as appetizers that smell very good and taste delicious. Little brownish chestnut baked in hot coal is a wonderful finger food too.

In addition, rice in bamboo tube is a wise choice as it is very soft and diners have to split the tube before eating. Rice is put into the bamboo tube, added with water and put on a fire until the fresh bamboo turns brown. Those skewers are quite cheap, at around VND8,000 each.

Meanwhile, travelers should not ignore grilled cabbage roll with beef, chicken wings with honey, salmon or other fish soaked in spices since they are fresh and smell good, which could be seen as main courses. Especially, many visitors love grilled pork in Sapa as it tastes sweet and tough, which is only found in this town.

Ethnic minorities raise a small strain of pigs endemic to the locality around their house and let them roam the field, so they are have little fat. The price is around VND15,000 a skewer.

Diners can have a full stomach when spending just VND100,000 or nearly US$5 on those delicious foods.

All of the ingredients to prepare those foods are grown in Sapa by local residents of tribal groups such as H’Mong, Dao and Tay.

It is wonderful to sit around a burning charcoal fire, on a small chair, enjoy grilled food and chat with friends in a cool night of a mountainous area. Diners can also listen to interesting stories from local ethnic people living there.

Others can walk around the town to buy souvenirs while eating these barbecue foods. Vendors selling grilled foods are everywhere in the foggy town from the market to small alleys but they mainly gather along Ham Rong Street, an area near the stone church in Sa Pa Town. Therefore, it is called the barbecue street because there are around ten barbecue food stalls in a street stretching just 100 meters.

For first-timers in Sa Pa, it should be also noted that the town is a valuable sight-seeing destination, and place for them to explore peculiar cultural traits of different tribal groups there.

Sa Pa is home to six different ethnic minority groups, each having their own festivals handed down from their ancestors and are still preserved in their full colors and identities these days. There is also the traditional market gathering on every Sunday, and residents from communes far away often prepare for the occasion the day earlier, with many departing for the weekly event on Saturday to be there in time. The famous Love Market awash with singing and flute sounds and young lads and lasses in colorful fashions is also organized on the occasion.

Sa Pa is also a good place for ones to escape the sultry weather in Ha Noi during summer, as the climate in the town, some 1,600 meters above the sea level, is quite mild. The average temperature in Sapa is only 15 degrees Celsius, and the maximum daytime temperature in Sa Pa is only 15 Celsius.

Sa Pa occasionally offers a good chance for those wanting to see snowfall in winter, when the temperature normally approaches zero.

Sa Pa can also brag about its magnificent natural beauties, from Ham Rong Mount that allows visitors to enjoy a panorama picture of the town to Thac Bac, from the Bamboo Forest to Sa Pa Ancient Rocks, from Cat Cat Village to Muong Hoa Valley among others.

But, standing out from all such values, road-side foods make Sapa a special rendezvous for visitors, especially those wanting to enjoy Sa Pa the budget-minded diner’s way.

Ha Long Bay selected as one of top 10 fishing spots around the world

halong bay vietnam

Ha Long Bay has been chosen as one of the world’s best fishing spots by the well-known travel website, Lonely Planet.

The website advised tourists to spend a night fishing squid in Ha Long Bay. It is a very special experience for tourists to see the beauty of the bay’s jade-green waters on moonless evenings and fishing for the slippery little cephalopods that go into the region’s best-known specialty: squid sausages.

With only a bamboo rod, a catch net and a lamp to attract the squid to the surface, anyone can hook themselves an impressive 30-plus squid in just a couple of hours. The stillness of the bay dotted by the dreamy reflection of the lamps makes for a contemplative, romantic evening, Lonely Planet said.

Squid season in Ha Long begins in April and runs through until January: the biggest squid are caught between October and November.

Also on the list of top 10 fishing spots around the world are Kola Penninsula (Russia), Cairns (Australia), South America, Eg-Uur river (Mongolia), Amazon river (Brazil), Osstduinkerke (Belgium), Congo river basin, Brainerd (USA) and Rio Grande (Tierra del Fuego).

Premium Vietnamese Fish Sauce: Tasting and Buying Guide

vietnamese fish sauce

Vietnamese fish sauce is a popular dish. Around the time when the banh mi book released, I received an email from Nili, asking about Red Boat competitors from Vietnam. (Sigh.) Asian food production is full of copycats and cut-throat rivalries. The photo that Nili emailed showed nuoc mam in bottles similar to Red Boat’s. It didn’t surprise me, and I asked where he saw these Vietnamese fish sauces. He pointed me to the humongous Shun Fat (Thuan Phat) market in San Jose. Shun Fat is known to have a wide variety of Southeast Asian ingredients and I’ve shopped at many of them in California. What else was I to do but investigate.

At the market, I scanned the shelves and select the ones made in Vietnam. With Red Boat added to the lineup, the result was the above collection – which ranged in prices from $4.99 to $7.99 at an Asian market. To solicit unbiased opinion, I asked students at one of my pho workshops to do a tasting and provide their comments. They’d come to class to learn about what to buy. I gave them a wide range to choose from. Though I offered cucumber for tasting, everyone tasted directly from disposable spoons. (No “eeeewww” reactions!) The responses were fascinating.

A well-heeled Russian woman and her mom found each fish sauce to have a character of their own. “One is smokey and all are pleasant,” she said. Many people found the New Town 60N bottle to be too strong tasting and slightly off. The sodium count (490 mg per tablespoon) was too low to be real. A small typo but also a lack of care.

The 9999 brand ($7.99) claimed to have a legacy dating back to 1895. Very cool, but it had preservatives and additives, as indicated on the label. I was skeptical but bought it because the handsome product label was professionally written in good English and the sodium count was dialed in at 1679 mg per tablespoon. That is, they were in earnest. Their bottle stood out almost in defiance of the Red Boat copycats. The 9999 flavor, many people agreed, was pleasant.

The Savory Hai Ngu 40N bottle came in close to Red Boat in preference and likeability. Savory included a strong narrative on its label like the others. I sense that since Red Boat debuted with a story on the label, others have seen an opportunity as well as a responsibility to tout Vietnam’s fish sauce production. (Finally.)

I took the Vietnamese fish sauce to my parents and asked them to taste for me too. My dad opted out because he’s still recovering from the stent implants; plus, he’s had a bout of shingles and his taste buds are all wacky.

Mom was up for it. When I poured all four fish sauces into spoons, we noticed something interesting: the 60N was thick and didn’t run like the others. I was skeptical about its claim of being highly concentrated but that was really something else. A drop on the wall of the ceramic spoon held its position until I disturbed it with a shake.

fish sauce vietnamese

My mom and I tasted all four and her response, from left to right was: salty, very salty, mild-ish, vaguely sweet. We dipped our fingers into the spoons to taste. Watching us, my dad quipped, “Oh, you can’t taste fish sauce like that. How many people eat fish sauce straight? You need to sprinkle some on rice, or maybe dip thinly sliced boiled pork belly into each one to sample and gauge its flavor properly.”

My mom said, “That’s one way to do it Bo Gia.” I could tell that my dad wished he could have participated. Nevertheless, he said, “When we lived in Vietnam, there were so many things going on with the war. No one had time to think about quality Vietnamese fish sauce. Now we do.” There are claims that 80% of the fish sauce said to be produced on Phu Quoc island are fake. I judged the merits of the ones here based on their flavor and hope that exported products are produced by honest people who are ready for primetime, international trade.

That’s from 83-year-old Bo Gia who counts his blessings every day. The takeaways from sampling these premium brands of fish sauce from Vietnam were:

More premium fish sauces are being exported but they are mostly available at hard-core Vietnamese or Viet-Chinese markets. These are not likely to be distributed for sale at say, Whole Foods. They are taking part in telling the story of artisanal fish sauce production in Vietnam. Though I haven’t seen their facilities, they appear to produce fish sauce in earnest.

What you like is really subjective. None of the ones we sampled tasted bad. They all had good aroma and flavor, unlike their cheap counterparts that lack personality and are just salty. Read the labels carefully then take a leap of faith!

Overall, I liked the Savory Hai Ngu and didn’t find anything objectionable about it. The 9999 was pleasant but I don’t know about the additives, which Ann on Facebook pointed out were akin to flavor enhancers like MSG. The New Town 60N is heavy and I’d have to remind myself of that whenever I used it. Red Boat is more widely distributed but if you see other premium brands from Vietnam at the market, try them and employ them like any other fish sauce.

After we tasted the fish sauce, my mom poured each into her bowl of nuoc cham dipping sauce. “I’m not going to waste it,” she said. She kinda just created her own nuoc mam blend.

Your thoughts, questions or experience with premium Vietnamese fish sauce from Vietnam?
